Lake Lokvar in Croatia

Lake Lokvar is an artificial lake on the River Lokvar in mountainous region of Croatia between cities Karlovac and Rijeka. The accumulation lake lies at an altitude of 770 m near the settlement Lokve. The lake has a surface area of 2.1 km2, its maximum depth extends up to 40 m, and holds around 32×106 m³ of water for the needs of several hydroelectric power plants connected to the Vinodol hydro power plant. The first name of the lake was the Youth Lake. Thus, it was called by the 27,000 volunteer builders who built a 51 meter high barrier from earth and stone in the youth work brigades between 1952 and 1955.
