The Charterhouse of Pleterje was founded in 1403 by Count Hermann II of Celje, and its construction completed by 1407. In 1471 an Ottoman raid burned down the buildings, which were reconstructed and a fortified wall with towers was added. After a long period of decline Archduke Ferdinand II of Inner Austria gave the monastery in 1595 to the Jesuits of Ljubljana. Pleterje became state property in 1772. In 1899, the Carthusian order bought back the former Carthusian monastery of Pleterje. During the Second World War, in 1943 partisans attacked the monastery and burned most of the 17 cells.

After Johann Weikhard von Valvasor’s testimony from the 17th century, the monastery was supposed to have been built on the site of the previous Sicherstein castle, which was supposed to be the seat of the Sicherstein knights.
…About five years ago, fell not far from Charterhouse Pleterje from the storm straight on the feild so-called dragon who did not have wings. Which was seen by many people, though terrible stench came from it, that nobody there could come closer.
I know very well that naturalists think the dragon is clean fiction, but I’m talking about what the people told me.
